Cyclone Michaung Forecasted to Bring Intense Rainfall to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
India Meteorological Department Issues Warning as Cyclone Michaung Strengthens: Depression in Southwest Bay of Bengal Moves West-Northwestward at 9 kmph, Center at 10.3°N, 85.3°E.
Cyclone Michaung is currently about 630 km east-southeast of Chennai, 740 km southeast of Nellore, 810 km southeast of Bapatla, and 800 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, as per the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The storm is expected to strengthen into a Cyclonic Storm by December 3.
Forecast models suggest that the cyclone will move northwestward and approach the south Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu coasts by the morning of December 4. Subsequently, it is projected to move nearly northwards, running parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast. The expected landfall is forecasted to occur between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the morning of December 5.
During the landfall, Cyclone Michaung is anticipated to have a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 100 kmph. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed about the updates and take necessary precautions in light of the approaching cyclone.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin held a review meeting with 12 district administration heads to address the potential impact of heavy rainfall in various districts over the next 2-3 days. Stalin provided guidelines and instructed officials to take precautionary measures, including evacuating residents from vulnerable areas in anticipation of the approaching cyclone.
The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), led by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, also assessed the preparedness of state governments and central ministries for Cyclone ‘Michaung’ in the Bay of Bengal during a meeting on Friday.

Meteorological authorities have issued a comprehensive rainfall warning for multiple regions in southern and eastern India due to the looming cyclonic storm over the Southwest Bay of Bengal.
The forecast indicates light to moderate rainfall in most places in North coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on December 2, with isolated heavy rainfall. From December 3 onward, rainfall intensity is expected to increase, with widespread rain and heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated on December 3, followed by rainfall at most places on December 4, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated spots. On December 5, there’s a likelihood of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, with subsequent decreased rainfall.
Residents in coastal Andhra Pradesh should be prepared for light to moderate rainfall on December 3, escalating to heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations. This pattern continues on December 4, with rainfall at most places and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. On December 5, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Odisha is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall in most places on December 4, with isolated heavy rainfall over south Coastal and adjoining south Interior Odisha. On December 5, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted over the same region.
