Coastal Devastation Unleashed by Cyclone Michaung’s Path.

Emergency services personnel evacuate stranded residents from a flooded colony after heavy rainfall owing to Cyclone Michaung at Mylapore in Chennai, on Wednesday.

Tragically, three additional lives were discovered beneath the rubble of a private building in Chennai, bringing the total loss of life to at least 20.

Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha are gradually returning to normalcy after Cyclone Michaung, while residents in the hardest-hit areas of Chennai are still dealing with persistent issues like stagnant water and ongoing power outages on Wednesday.

Multiple state and central agencies worked tirelessly on relief and rescue operations in flooded suburbs like Tambaram and Velachery throughout the day. Unfortunately, three more lives were lost under the debris of a collapsed private building in Chennai, bringing the death toll to at least 20.

Despite heavy rains in parts of Tamil Nadu such as Virudhunagar, Dindigul, and Sivaganga on Wednesday, officials reassured that there was no additional damage. The cyclone had weakened, and the worst was now behind. India Meteorological Department (IMD) director general Mrityunjay Mohapatra mentioned that Michaung, which made landfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, had weakened into a deep depression by midnight and further transformed into a well-marked pressure area by the afternoon.

He added that the system is expected to dissipate as it continues its northward trajectory.

Wednesday’s visuals from parts of Chennai and neighboring districts depicted the havoc caused by Michaung. Several localities remained inundated, necessitating rescue efforts with inflatable boats. Teams from the NDRF, SDRF, and civic agencies worked tirelessly to guide stranded individuals to higher ground, and there was an ongoing need for distributing food packets. Indian Air Force helicopters were deployed for air-dropping relief material in parts of the city that remained challenging to access.

Large parts of the city remained without power for a third day, primarily as a precautionary measure due to submerged power lines. Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena mentioned that civic bodies were actively draining water in various Chennai areas. Once complete, efforts were directed towards cleaning roads and restoring drinking water supply.

Chief Minister MK Stalin reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking interim relief of ₹5,060 crore. In his letter, Stalin highlighted the extensive damage caused by unprecedented rains triggered by the cyclone, especially in Chennai corporation areas. The damage encompassed severe impacts on infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and public buildings, significantly affecting the livelihoods of thousands of people.

During zero hour in Parliament on Wednesday, Baalu called for declaring the floods caused by Michaung a national calamity. Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences, stating, “My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones due to Cyclone Michaung, especially in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry.” He acknowledged the ongoing efforts of authorities on the ground and assured continuous support until the situation fully normalizes.

In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, reacting to the unfortunate death of a police constable during relief work, directed government officials to work compassionately to restore normalcy.
